Al-Mashat meets with the head of the European Union delegation in Cairo to discuss cooperation priorities during the next stage

● $353 million in development grants from the European Union during 2020 to 2023 to support development efforts in various fields, especially food security, health, and women’s empowerment.

The Minister of International Cooperation, H.E. Dr. Rania A. Al-Mashat, met with the Head of the EU Delegation in Cairo, Ambassador Christian Berger, in light of the periodic meetings H.E. holds with multilateral and bilateral development partners to discuss cooperation priorities during the next phase, and to follow up on the performance of the joint cooperation portfolio.

During the meeting, Al-Mashat stressed the importance of cooperation between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the EU, and joint work to maximize the use of development financing to support national priority projects in various sectors, most notably health and food security, sanitation and the environment, in addition to strengthening the partnership with the EU in clean energy, and green hydrogen.

H.E. thanked the efforts made by the EU and the continuous coordination with the Ministry of International Cooperation and the relevant entities during the current year, especially in implementing the pledges of the NWFE program, especially in the energy pillar, in addition to supporting the country’s efforts in the field of green hydrogen.

They also discussed the priorities of the next phase within the framework of joint cooperation, in light of the future cooperation document between Egypt and the EU for the period 2021-2027, which was approved in June 2020, especially in the areas of empowering women, increasing trade, equal opportunities and technical assistance in a variety of sectors. 

The EU will also participate in financing the “Sustainable Green Industries” project through joint financing with the European Investment Bank, within the framework of the “European Fund for Sustainable Development” and the “Team Europe Initiative” with a value of €30 million.

Al-Mashat referred to the launch of the annual report of the Ministry of International Cooperation for the year 2023 under the title “Platforms for Policy & Practice,” which was launched recently and monitors the details of development cooperation efforts made with development partners to advance the country’s development efforts in various fields.

According to the report, the total development grants that were signed with the EU during the period from 2020 to 2023 amount to about $353 million, in various fields, including a grant for the project to expand and develop the Alexandria West Wastewater Treatment Plant, and grants for the project to implement 4 lifting stations and ejection lines and construct Helwan Wastewater Treatment Plant, a grant to combat the causes of irregular migration and support civil society in Upper Egypt, a grant to the program to confront the economic causes leading to illegal immigration, a grant to the EU Program for Equal Opportunities, as well as a general, technical and vocational education program to promote employment in areas affected by migration.
