During her participation in the farewell ceremony for the British Ambassador to Egypt .. H.E. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat: We highly value Ambassador Gareth Bayley’s active role in advancing Egypt–UK economic relations and his efforts to deepen partnerships that empower the private sector

The British Ambassador expresses deep appreciation for the Egyptian government and people, and affirms the strength of historic bilateral ties

H.E. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, took part in the farewell ceremony held in honor of H.E. Ambassador Gareth Bayley, the outgoing Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Egypt. The event, organized by the Egyptian-British Business Association (EBBA), marked the conclusion of his tenure in Cairo and brought together a wide array of public figures and representatives from both the Egyptian and British business communities.

In her remarks, H.E. Dr. Al-Mashat commended Ambassador Bayley’s pivotal contributions since 2021 in strengthening Egypt–UK economic relations. She emphasized his instrumental role in fostering fruitful cooperation between the private sectors of both countries, particularly through close collaboration with British International Investment (BII) and the advancement of bilateral governmental partnerships.

The Minister also highlighted the significant developments in Egypt–UK development cooperation in recent years. These include the UK’s support for launching Egypt’s NWFE (Nexus of Water, Food, and Energy) national platform, as well as the launch of the Hafiz platform, which provides financial and technical support for the private sector. She noted the importance of joint efforts to diversify sources of innovative finance for both the public and private sectors, expand mechanisms for financing SMEs, and support climate-focused startups through the Climate Finance Accelerator programme, implemented in partnership with the government and private sector.

For his part, H.E. Ambassador Gareth Bayley expressed his deep gratitude to the Egyptian government and people for the warmth and hospitality he received throughout his tenure. He underscored the long-standing and historic nature of Egypt–UK relations, not only at the governmental level but also across private sector cooperation.

Ambassador Bayley also pointed to the various initiatives the UK has supported in Egypt, most notably the NWFE platform, which serves as a vital tool for mobilizing climate investment and accelerating Egypt’s green transition.

The United Kingdom contributes a grant to the Energy Pillar of the NWFE programme, managed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). It also plays a key role in the Food Pillar through the International Partnership for integration with NWFE efforts. In this context, the Government of Egypt—represented by the Ministry of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation—signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of the United Kingdom, represented by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), to enhance strategic cooperation on food security.

Egypt–UK relations continue to span a broad array of sectors, with numerous British companies actively investing in Egypt. In 2020, the Ministry of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, along with the UK Department for International Development, issued a joint statement to strengthen economic cooperation. This was announced on the sidelines of the UK–Africa Investment Summit.
