The Minister of International Cooperation H.E. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat met with the Hong Kong’s Secretary for Financial Services & the Treasury Christopher Hui, where they discussed joint cooperation with the two Vice-Presidents of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), during H.E.’s participation in the AIIB 2023 Annual Meetings in Sharm El-Sheikh.
During the meeting, Al-Mashat highlighted Hong Kong’s government for the warm reception during their participation in the Belt and Road Forum, stressing its importance as a prelude to the Beijing summit next month, with the aim of strengthening cooperation in light of the international initiative and stimulating South-South cooperation efforts.
The two sides discussed areas of joint cooperation where H.E. noted Egypt's keenness to enhance cooperation with the Hong Kong market as it is one of the largest financial centers in the world, benefit from innovative financial instruments, enhance financial services in light of the Belt and Road Initiative, stimulate partnerships with the private sector on both sides, and increase joint investments.
Al-Mashat also pointed to increasing cooperation and stimulating comprehensive multilateral partnerships between Egypt, Hong Kong, and the AIIB in many strategic sectors, the most important of which is the Suez Canal Economic Zone, stimulating investment in sustainable infrastructure, and pushing the green and sustainable transformation.
H.E. pointed out the importance of influential partnerships between governments, the private sector and philanthropic organizations, calling on profit-making organizations operating in Hong Kong to enter into partnerships with the private sector to promote comprehensive and sustainable growth in Egypt and increase investments in priority areas.
Al-Mashat further expressed her aspiration for the visit of the Chief Executive of Hong Kong to Egypt to explore opportunities for close joint cooperation in various fields.
For his part, Hui, pointed out the special importance of the Suez Canal within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, not only because of its strategic location and its contribution to the development of global trade, but also the role of the Suez Canal Economic Zone in the field of advanced technology and interest in new technology, noting the role of the Chinese Economic Zone.
He added that Hong Kong aspires to have an active role in Egypt given its strategic location, referring to the visit made by Hong Kong Chief Executive, John Lee, to Saudi Arabia and the UAE early this year and his aspiration to visit Egypt.
