Minister of International Cooperation, H.E. Dr. Rania Al Mashat, announced that Egypt’s parliament approved 10 agreements worth over 400 million dollars to support agriculture, women empowerment and small and medium enterprises, which promotes sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
The House of Representatives approved 4 agreements of the Ministry of International Cooperation with the United States of America, which amount to about 33.4 million dollars. These agreements include Presidential Decision No. 477 regarding approval of the Fifth Amendment on the Assistance Agreement signed with the United States of America for rural development and increasing farmers’ incomes worth 4 million and 426 thousand dollars, and Presidential Resolution No. 474 of 2020 regarding the Fourth Amendment on basic education worth 15 million dollars. It also includes Presidential Decree No. 484 regarding approval of the Fifth Amendment for cooperation in the field of science and technology worth 4 million dollars, and Presidential Decree No. 473 of 2020 regarding the approval of the Third Amendment to improve and strengthen the health sector, worth 10 million dollars. Minister Rania Al Mashat noted that these agreements come under the new Global Partnerships Narrative, which is based on 3 main pillars: people at the core, projects in action, and purpose as the driver in order to achieve the 2030 National Agenda which are in line with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The current portfolio of the United States with Egypt includes 12 projects totaling 1861.974 million dollars to finance 3 projects in the housing sector worth 554.991 million dollars, 4 projects in the education sector worth 1015.551 million dollars, one project in the health sector worth 31.086 million dollars, and another in the agricultural sector worth 72.598 million. House of Representatives also approved 5 agreements by the Ministry of International Cooperation with the OPEC Fund for International Development, Spain, France and Canada. These agreements include Presidential Decree No. 454 of 2020 approving a loan agreement between Egypt and OPEC Fund for International Development to support medium, small and micro enterprises, worth 95 million dollars, and Presidential Decree No. 403 regarding the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development to provide a grant worth 200,000 euros to finance the project “Creating job opportunities for women in Upper Egypt.” It also includes Presidential Decree No. 447 regarding Spain’s grant worth 150 thousand euros to finance the project "Creating job opportunities for Youth", and Presidential Decree No. 404 regarding the tripartite partnership agreement to implement the program of "Technical Assistance for the Development of Wholesale Trade in Foodstuff Markets in Egypt,” worth 700 thousand euros, between Egypt and the French Development Agency, as well as Presidential Decree No. 367 of 2020 regarding the agreement between Egypt and Canada for the project "Economic Empowerment of Women for Inclusive and Sustainable Growth in Egypt", worth 8 million and 900 thousand dollars. The House of Representatives also approved an agreement with the African Development Bank worth 225 million euros to support infrastructure and green recovery by increasing the expansion of renewable energy and improving the financial sustainability of the electricity sector, with an aim to ensure greater participation of the private sector to unlock Egypt’s green transformation. Through the mapping exercise of the Ministry of International Cooperation that seeks to align the SDG goals with each development project, Al Mashat noted that the projects previously mentioned achieve Goal 3 for good health and wellbeing, Goal 4 for quality education, Goal 5 for gender equality, Goal 8 for decent work and economic growth, Goal 9 for industry, innovation and infrastructure, Goal 11 for sustainable cities and communities, Goal 13 for climate action and Goal 17 for partnerships for goals.
