Organized by the Sustainable Energy for All During the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA77) in New York: Minister of International Cooperation H.E. Dr. Rania A. Al-Mashat Participates in Roundtable on “Progress Shaping an Africa-Led Just Energy Transition”

The Minister of International Cooperation H.E. Dr. Rania A. Al-Mashat participated in a roundtable on “Progress Shaping an Africa-Led Just Energy Transition”, organized by the Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL)  as part of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA77) in New York. 

This also included  ministers from a number of African States, including Nigeria, Rwanda and Senegal, as well as Frans Timmermans, the Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, and Cristina Duarte, the UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Africa, and a number of development partners and UN agencies to discuss mechanisms for an equitable green transition within the continent.

Organized by the SEforALL, an international organization that works in partnership with the UN and government leaders, private sector, financial institutions, and philanthropies, to drive faster action towards the achievement of SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, in line with the Paris Agreement on climate. 

In her remarks, Al-Mashat stated that Egypt had launched its Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy 2035, aiming to increase renewable energy by 42% in 2035. The country has taken several steps towards achieving this goal. Moreover, the  National Climate Change Strategy 2050 was also launched, driving adaptation and mitigation efforts, and also announced its nationally determined contribution (NDCs), low-emission economic growth, and enhanced resilience to climate change; also pushing the continent's green agenda during, and beyond, the COP27.

During the global SEforALL Forum in Kigali from May 17 to 19, 2022, ministers and high-level representatives from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Uganda, and Zimbabwe met to discuss the requirements for a just and equitable energy transition in Africa. This concluded with the Kigali Communique, which includes seven key principles to address development gaps, and to put Africa on a pathway, aligned with the Paris Agreement on climate change, to economic prosperity and Net-Zero. The seven key principles which target the achievement of SDG7 in Africa.

Al-Mashat said that the points in the aforementioned communique emphasize the common denominator of the objectives of all African countries in terms of a just, green  transition and the expansion of sustainable energy sources. The Minister added that Egypt has been taking steps to accelerate the implementation of the SDGs, particularly those related to sustainable energy and climate action.

Moreover, the Minister referred to the government’s efforts in moving from pledges to implementation, through the launch of Egypt’s Country Platform for NWFE Program, a nexus of water, food and energy projects, that falls within the National Climate Change Strategy 2050. Al-Mashat also discussed the Sharm El-Sheikh Guidebook for Just Financing, which will be launched at COP27, to support in closing the climate finance gap.

The Minister is participating in the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), held in New York, under the theme, “A Watershed Moment: Transformative Solutions to Interlocking Challenges”, to address the triple crises of COVID-19, climate change and Russian-Ukrainian crisis. The meetings discuss a number of important topics, notably food insecurity, energy prices and disruptions to global supply chains.

Recently, the Ministry of International Cooperation, in cooperation with the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Finance and Environment, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, organized the second edition of the Egypt-International Cooperation Forum (Egypt-ICF), and the meeting of African Ministers of Economy, Finance and Environment, under the auspices and presence of H.E. President Abdel Fattah Sisi, the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt. 

The forum witnessed the participation of more than 23 African governments, and around 20 discussion sessions, workshops and roundtables were held to galvanize the international community to support Africa’s climate change agenda, and to consolidate messages ahead of "Finance Day" during COP27.
