The Ministry of International Cooperation launched a new film showcasing the launch story of the first and largest factory in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to produce polycarbonate sheets, funded through international partnerships. The film comes as part of #GameChangers, the digital campaign initiated by the Ministry last March aiming to promote Egypt’s private sector participation in the development framework and to spur development financing in the sector. The digital campaign demonstrates the value of public-private partnership in implementing the national development agenda, and in achieving a sustainable future. The film shows the story of Polyee Plast’s inauguration, a small enterprise producing plastic and polycarbonate sheets. The company obtained financing from the Egyptian Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (MSMEDA) in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), at a value of EGP 3.6 million. Consequently, the company’s annual sales amounted to about EGP 80 million. The Minister of International Cooperation H.E. Dr. Rania A. Al-Mashat stressed the importance of international partnerships in supporting Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs), as they are the backbone of the Egyptian economy pushing for growth and job creation in the business environment. She explained that the Ministry secured $457 million to MSMEs through international partnerships with multilateral and bilateral partners in 2020. In producing polycarbonate sheets, the Polyee Plast company, which has 120 employees, provides an alternative to glass as it can be used in manufacturing doors, windows, walls and in supporting various installations. With the development financing provided to the company, Polyee Plast was able to expand its production lines and inaugurate a second factory in the third industrial zone in Badr City, Cairo. The company currently has two factories covering an area of 12,000 meters; they have also been able to switch from import manufacturing to exporting and reaching global markets. The Chairman of Polyee Plast Amr Fetoh stated, “I have always had an ambition to make an impact and start a successful business in Egypt. I believe that we have to switch our strategies and focus on the exporting business models rather than the importing models. The idea to manufacture polycarbonate sheets stemmed from the regional market need for a production hub in Egypt.” Fetoh elaborated that the Project Development Authority has also played an active role in expanding the production line of the factory. The #GameChangers campaign is within the framework of the third principle of Economic Diplomacy which is the Global Partnerships Narrative; through which the Ministry of International Cooperation seeks to promote development efforts, and successful international partnerships. The featured stories showcase constructive public-private dialogue leading towards the achievement of national and global sustainable targets across various sectors including energy, transportation, digitization, and infrastructure. The campaign follows a transparent and consistent narrative placing ‘People at the Core’, ‘Projects in Action’, and ‘Purpose as the Driver’. #GameChangers sheds light on the dynamic force of Egypt - the private sector - that drives the country’s economic growth within the global sustainable standards. With an emphasis on entrepreneurs and SMEs venturing into Egypt’s development agenda, the campaign aims to spur development financing in the private sector as it strides towards the achievement of the national development plan. Through the social media platforms, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter, #GameChangers reaches millions of youth and citizens; creating awareness about sustainable development by displaying the importance of partnerships and their role in creating job opportunities and in achieving economic growth.
