On 8 May 2016, the Minister of International Cooperation Dr. Sahar Nasr chaired a national follow-up committee meeting for the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in presence of a mission from the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), the Minister’s Advisor of the UN Affairs Ms. Yara El Abd, and representatives from the Ministries Foreign Affairs, Planning, Environment, Health, and Housing & Urban Communities.
At the beginning of the meeting, Dr. Nasr welcomed the UN mission, emphasizing the necessity to identify a comprehensive approach for the achievement of SDGs. She discussed reports being prepared for the preparatory conference to be held in May 2016, given that such reports are expected to be proposed in the high-level political conference to be held in New York next July. The Minister noted that human resources development served as a solid basis for Egypt’s strategy to achieve SDGs.
The United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Minister emphasized, was considered Egypt’s strategic key partner, indicating that the Egyptian Government sought to achieve significant progress in several fields during the last period and gave due regard to enhancing standards of living, which reflects Egypt’s commitment to the UN SDGs. Several partners from the public and private sectors as well as the civil society took part in drafting Egypt’s strategy, which aims to achieve comprehensive sustainable development in order to eliminate poverty, added Dr. Nasr.
Further, the Minister gave an overview of the Egyptian Government’s efforts to encourage growth and improve standards of living, highlighting the social housing program recently launched by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, which would provide low-income citizens with housing units and serve approximately 3.6 million citizens.
Dr. Nasr emphasized the significance of effective coordination between all national programs and development priorities as well as the necessity to identify necessary solutions for overcoming any obstacles facing the achievement of SDGs.
