In line with MOIC's and the Japanese side's keenness to support the state's plan to improve medical services, on 14 September 2015, MOIC signed a grant agreement worth USD 14 million to the Project for Construction of Outpatient Facility at Cairo University Specialized Pediatric Hospital, given that the agreement was approved by the Parliament's Education & Scientific Research Committee on 9 May 2016 and is expected to be discussed in a parliamentary general session.
This project contributes to reducing the demand on the old Abu El-Rish Hospital and El-Mounira General Hospital, besides serving more than 90000 patients annually through providing necessary equipment, including laboratories and medical instruments, and benefiting from the Japanese experiences in strengthening the capacities of medical staff.
This project came in line with the Japanese side's support of the health sector, given that Japan provided grants worth USD 58.3 million to implement more than five projects for constructing, expanding, and renovating the Cairo University Children Hospital, besides technical cooperation for nursing education and improving children's healthcare services, emergencies, and school health.
Within the framework of the Egyptian- Japanese cooperation initiative launched by President el-Sisi and the Japanese PM on 29 February 2016, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) currently cooperates with the relevant Egyptian authorities to design a cooperation strategy in the health sector, including improving the health insurance system, developing human resources, focusing on the maternal and child health, and enhancing cooperation between the private sector in both countries in the field of technology and medical devices, besides tripartite cooperation in the health sector in favor of Africa Sub-Saharan Africa.
